Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue and plays a key role in many bodily functions. During stressful situations (i.e. heavy resistance training) the muscles can lose large quantities of glutamine which be a may be a signal for protein catabolism (muscle breakdown). Glutamine supplementation has been shown to prevent the loss of lean body mass and positively influence protein synthesis.

Glutamine also affects glucose metabolism and the regulation of gluconeogenesis. The body converts Glutamine to glucose, especially during low calorie/low carbohydrate diets. Supplemental L-Glutamine may prevent the destruction of lean body mass by increasing Glutamine in the bloodstream, thereby reducing the body’s need to cannibalise it’s own muscle tissue for energy.
